1997 Annual Meeting
Plans for our 1997 meeting are being developed. The Menominee Indian
Tribe will be hosting the meeting at their hotel/casino complex in
Keshena, Wisconsin. This is in
the heart of the Menominee Forest, which will provide us with a unique chance to see their forest and management practices. The meeting dates are set for September 9-11. The hotel complex has a nice conference room that will accommodate about 130 people. This will be the Midwest Mensurationists' 31st annual meeting.
The format of the meeting this year will again be largely contributed papers and posters. You should fill out a meeting planning questionnaire by April 14, 1997 if you are interested in presenting your work. We are also planning to have some special events:
- A day-long (or half-day if necessary) tour of the
Menominee forests with some of the forestry staff. From the large
white pines to hardwoods, we will see some unique forests that will
remind people of turn-of-the-century forests of the Lake States. Yet
this forest has been intensively managed for over 100 years. We will
be able to discuss how the Tribe has successfully managed their forest
under sustained yield principles and their plans to continue into the future.
- We are trying to put together a panel of experts that
helped develop the original Continuous Forest Inventory systems (CFI)
in the Lake States. This would be a good time to step back and discuss
some of the basic concepts of the original CFI systems and how their
trials and tribulations can help the new generation of inventory
experts. Since the Menominee Tribe believes that part of their success comes from the CFI, it will give all of us a chance to see how this came about.
There are a block of rooms set aside at the Menominee hotel. The rooms
will be $55.00 per day double occupancy ($55.00 single), plus tax.
There is a full-service restaurant available at the hotel, as well as
a casino for those who wish to partake. Other motels are available in
Shawano, located 7 miles south of Keshena. There are some recreational
attractions close by, including the ever-popular Green Bay Packer Hall
of Fame, the Nicolet National Forest and rafting on the Wolf River.
